Cross always tried to tell me that I needed to sleep to recharge. But I didn’t actually need to sleep in this state, something I realised as I lay wide awake for days. All I could see was Chaz burning on the surface of the pit, all I could hear was his scream when the salt was poured over his burnt, peeling flesh.

All I could see and hear was the Watcher who went to the prince of hell in my place.

I felt him come into the room. Hound had left me a while ago, as my unresponsiveness was annoying him.

“How long do you plan to wallow?” Sam’s voice was sharp, his anger evident.

“I’m in limbo, I have eternity.”

“You have five minutes to get up.”

“Or what?”

“Or I’m getting into bed with you, and I’m going to remind you why you’re mine.”

I rolled my head to the side. “Seriously? Sex?” I felt my anger rising. “You think you can just climb into bed, and I’ll just spread ’em and say jump on.”

“No. I expect you to beg first.”

Swinging my legs over the side of the bed, I stood, glaring at him. “You are such a pain in my arse, do you know that?”

“Told you I would get her out of bed,” Sam spoke casually, and Cross appeared beside him.

“I didn’t think the idea of having sex with you being so repulsive to her was something you would want to broadcast.” Cross looked at me as he spoke and gave me a wink.

That was actually funny, and I grinned as Sam’s jaw tightened, biting back his response.

“Why are you both in my bedroom?” I asked as I stretched the kinks out.

“Your muscles aren’t even sore,” Sam muttered. “You need to stop thinking that you’re human.”

“I am human.” I thought about it. My body was elsewhere. “Aren’t I?” Turning to Cross, I felt anxious. “When I go back, I’ll be human?”

“Possibly.”

“Possibly? Are you serious?” I looked between them both. “Possibly? Define possibly.”

“You’ve been here for a while.” Sam sounded hesitant. Why would this demon, who probably invented the word “confidence,” be hesitant?

I kept my attention trained on him as I spoke to Cross. “What’s the Watcher saying?” Sam raised an eyebrow at my terminology but said nothing. Cross was silent for too long, but I knew he was still in the room. “The fact both of you are thinking of how to tell me this, worries me.”

“It makes sense if you are a demon,” Cross started, and my gaze snapped to his. “Only because they were never human,” he added on hurriedly.

“You’re not demon or human. Make it make sense.”

“You have too much power,” Sam broke in. “You think that you have lost it, but you haven’t, we all feel it. Since your experiments in the Void, it’s increased.” His dead stare made me swallow my protestations about the “experiments.” “Some of it seems to be blocked to you, but when you went topside and met with Asmodeous, you actually uncovered a lot of that which you had hidden.
