Cross always tried to tell me that I needed to sleep to recharge. But I didnât actually need to sleep in this state, something I realised as I lay wide awake for days. All I could see was Chaz burning on the surface of the pit, all I could hear was his scream when the salt was poured over his burnt, peeling flesh.
All I could see and hear was the Watcher who went to the prince of hell in my place.
I felt him come into the room. Hound had left me a while ago, as my unresponsiveness was annoying him.
âHow long do you plan to wallow?â Samâs voice was sharp, his anger evident.
âIâm in limbo, I have eternity.â
âYou have five minutes to get up.â
âOr what?â
âOr Iâm getting into bed with you, and Iâm going to remind you why youâre mine.â
I rolled my head to the side. âSeriously? Sex?â I felt my anger rising. âYou think you can just climb into bed, and Iâll just spread âem and say jump on.â
âNo. I expect you to beg first.â
Swinging my legs over the side of the bed, I stood, glaring at him. âYou are such a pain in my arse, do you know that?â
âTold you I would get her out of bed,â Sam spoke casually, and Cross appeared beside him.
âI didnât think the idea of having sex with you being so repulsive to her was something you would want to broadcast.â Cross looked at me as he spoke and gave me a wink.
That was actually funny, and I grinned as Samâs jaw tightened, biting back his response.
âWhy are you both in my bedroom?â I asked as I stretched the kinks out.
âYour muscles arenât even sore,â Sam muttered. âYou need to stop thinking that youâre human.â
âI am human.â I thought about it. My body was elsewhere. âArenât I?â Turning to Cross, I felt anxious. âWhen I go back, Iâll be human?â
âPossibly.â
âPossibly? Are you serious?â I looked between them both. âPossibly? Define possibly.â
âYouâve been here for a while.â Sam sounded hesitant. Why would this demon, who probably invented the word âconfidence,â be hesitant?
I kept my attention trained on him as I spoke to Cross. âWhatâs the Watcher saying?â Sam raised an eyebrow at my terminology but said nothing. Cross was silent for too long, but I knew he was still in the room. âThe fact both of you are thinking of how to tell me this, worries me.â
âIt makes sense if you are a demon,â Cross started, and my gaze snapped to his. âOnly because they were never human,â he added on hurriedly.
âYouâre not demon or human. Make it make sense.â
âYou have too much power,â Sam broke in. âYou think that you have lost it, but you havenât, we all feel it. Since your experiments in the Void, itâs increased.â His dead stare made me swallow my protestations about the âexperiments.â âSome of it seems to be blocked to you, but when you went topside and met with Asmodeous, you actually uncovered a lot of that which you had hidden.
